AT Solutions should
always be tried out by the student where and when he will be using the technology.
Many factors can effect the success of the intervention- trying it out is the
best way to find out! Consider the following in making your Plan then select an
actual form to use. Outcome(s) What do you want to
happen? Increased speed, production, independence? How does the use of the AT
relate to IEP goals/objectives? Is training on the use of the AT Solution required
before it is applied? Criteria for Success What will
happen if the student is successful using the AT Solution? What can you actually
measure? What will he be able to do? Initiate writing with 2 verbal prompts? No
prompts? Write 5 word sentences with punctuation? Increase word use/decrease word/picture
associations? Trial Activities Select specific classroom
activities to try out your AT Solution. This may be a particular time of day (i.e.
AM -Journal writing); general activities (e.g. worksheets) or a specific project
(e.g. Themes). AT solutions are selected for specific tasks - begin there. Person
Responsible Identify who is responsible for setting up the technology,
the activity, supporting the student, training the student and staff, and data
collection. Length of AT Trial? How long will the
AT trial continue? When will you know if outcomes are reached? It is important
to set a date for a new team meeting so that a recommendation can be made based
on data received.
Data Collection When trying
out an AT Solution, the student should be observed using the AT in the natural
environment that he will be using it in. Data should be collected as to how the
AT intervention affects the student's performance. What data and how it is collected
will differ. Select from one of the forms below to collect your user data. All
examples below were adapted from P. Reed, G. Bowser, & J. Korsten's book:
How do you know
it? How can you show it? (2002).
Consider using these forms as ongoing monitoring system of intervention.
Remember - AT use is a dynamic process!
