Hints for Success
Language Arts/ Writing When students have difficulty writing, examine the purpose of the writing activity to see where modification can and should be made. Students need to be able to write short answers and sign their name- this is important for basic writing mechanics and life skills! However, when the activity requires expressing ideas, a variety of approaches should be considered -- from scribes to computer programs, as the focus is now on inventiveness and expression which differs from the actual mechanics of writing. Alternate approaches can actually enrich the expressive activity as we recognize the emphasis is placed on the student's ability to think and reflect. As the computer requires different writing mechanic skills, the student should be comfortable with navigating a computer program before it is used as a tool for expressive activities.

Talking Word Processors
Beginning writers often like to hear the computer echo every letter they type and then hear the words they have written spoken by the computer. Talking dictionaries are often available for spell checking.
