Integrating AT into the IEP

References

AT as Part of Related Services

Related services are those support services including speech, occupational and physical therapy, transportation, counseling and adaptive physical education. Often, students need to be trained in the use of the device before using the tool in the educational process. Training to use a computer, wheelchair or communication device can occur as a related service that supports the student's educational program. Preparation for the use of the device can also include a determination of correct positioning and related skill building.

Examples of AT as a related service include walkers, wheelchairs, and various positioning devices. Augmentative communication devices and computers are also sometimes listed there. When AT is to be included in the IEP as a related service, it will appear in the chart of related services. Since Related Services must have the Amount/Frequency, Duration, and Location of the service specified, that information must be completed.

example

Stephanie is in the third grade. She has cerebral palsy that makes it difficult for her to walk long distances. Walking is so fatiguing that she does not recover from the exertion for 30-45 minutes and is not able to concentrate on school activities if long walks are required. She is able to walk short distances with no ill effects if enough time is provided.
